                                              Bookkeeper Job Description

         Bookkeepers are responsible for maintaining an organization’s key accounting records, known as ledgers. Day-to-day activities include recording transactions such as income and outgoings, and posting them in various accounts. Being a broad and varied role, A Bookkeeper job description should emphasize the need for a strong sense of time management and organizational skills, and with exposure to many aspect of the accounting function it can be a stepping stone to a more senior or specialized accounting role.

Bookkeeper Responsibilities:

  • Maintains records of financial transactions by establishing accounts; posting transactions; ensure legal requirements compliance.
  • Develops system to account for financial transactions by establishing a chart of accounts; defining bookkeeping policies and procedures.
  • Maintains subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and posting transactions.
  • Balances subsidiary accounts by reconciling entries.
  • Maintains general ledger by transferring subsidiary account summaries.
  • Balances general ledger by preparing a trial balance; reconciling entries.
  • Maintains historical records by filing documents.
  • Prepares financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Bookkeeper Requirements:

  • Should have a Bachelor Degree in Accounting or Business Administration. Excellent knowledge of general accounting principles. CPA is a plus.
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping software.
  • At least 2-3 years of bookkeeping experience, preferably within a business-services environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy of work.
  • Experience with accounting software such as Xero, Quickbooks, or MYOB.
  • Able to prepare, review and understand a financial statement.
